Beim Arbeiten mit Lasersystemen der Laserklasse 3R und höher können schwerwiegende Schäden am menschlichen Auge entstehen. Das menschliche Auge kann durch direkte oder indirekte Lasereinstrahlung dauerhaft geschädigt werden. Verletzungen auf der Netzhaut ereignen sich zumeist im Bereich von 400-1400nm, während sich Defekte auf Hornhaut oder Linse sich im UV Bereich abspielen (190-400nm). Deswegen ist es unerlässlich mit Hilfe einer passenden Laserschutzbrille die Augen entsprechend zu schützen. Die nach gültiger Norm DIN EN 207 (Vollschutz) zertifizierte Laserschutzbrille erfüllt die gesetzlichen Vorschriften und schützt die Augen sicher vor gefährlicher Laserstrahlung. Laserschutzbrillen und die darin enthaltenen Filter sind so konzipiert, dass sie die spezifische Energie des Lasers absorbieren. Daher muss die optimale Schutzbrille explizit für den benötigten Wellenlängenbereich, den Strahlungsspitzenwert und der benötigten optischen Dichte ausgewählt werden. Natürlich spielen auch die Tageslichttransmission, das Gesichtsfeld sowie der Tragekomfort des Rahmens eine entscheidende Rolle. Die Fassung der Laserschutzbrille verhindert ein seitliches Eindringen des Laserstrahls.
